Networked Dramaturgy in Purples’ WeChat Theatre

Purples Online uses characters, speaking permissions and timed rules to turn a WeChat group into a networked performance situation.

Guide published: 2026-10-27

Messages become premises for a shared world

The first Purples Online invitation, published on 14 January 2022, proposes a WeChat group in which participants invent their own characters. Each character inhabits a shared fictional world. Their statements become premises for later contributions, allowing small narratives to accumulate into a changing common setting.

This is a practical form of networked dramaturgy. A screen name identifies a speaker, an earlier message supplies material to answer, and a later contribution can extend the relationships already established. The familiar infrastructure of group messaging acquires a performance function. Participants compose their own accounts while attending to what other characters have introduced.

Character rules redistribute speaking and observing

The second invitation, dated 21 January, separates narrative participants from observers. Speaking characters are specified as women, while observers use the role name Silent Men and remain silent during the scheduled period. The invitation distinguishes a participant’s own gender from the part they play. A character therefore organises both a story and access to the conversation.

The article includes extracts from a fictional participant’s speech in the first episode. These excerpts show character emerging through remembered experiences, a speaking style and responses to others. Screen names and speaking permissions jointly compose the audience relationship: observing becomes a position inside the situation.

The Confessional changes identities at a timed threshold

The Confessional, published on 27 January, proposes ten sinners and five judges. The judges possess the power to pardon; sinners may seek that pardon; each judge must make a choice before a specified deadline. Conversation is linked to an action that can change a character’s status.

At 00:30, the announced choices form a structural threshold. Pardoned characters become people and fall silent alongside the judges, leaving the remaining sinners to continue the closing narration. Time, naming and permission to speak produce the turn together. The proposed participant numbers describe positions in a score; their dramatic force lies in how those positions interact.

The funeral score gives debate, switching and spectatorship a form

The fourth score, published on 11 February and planned by 洞洞捌, divides participants into those preparing a funeral and those opposing it. Only one side may speak during the opening half-hour. A later thirty-minute interval permits changes of allegiance, while observers may send only a thumbs-up emoji. Debate acquires a sequence and a visible form.

Reading the four texts together reveals an evolving participation protocol: establish a common world, distribute voices, then let identities and factions change over time. The public invitations, rules and published excerpts are distinct parts of that record. They offer a precise route into text-based participatory performance through language, timing and the permissions that organise a remote encounter.
