Joining a P4 Theatre Project: Calls, Roles and Records

Participation at P4 has included more than performing. Begin with the roles and records of a particular project.

Guide published: 2026-10-27

Different calls describe different work

The 2020 P4U rules distinguish creative work from observation and documentation. P4 carries the initiator’s creative project, while the 3P Group documents, observes and responds; the people involved can move between those positions. This gives a first-time reader a more precise entry than the idea that participation simply means becoming an actor.

The 2022 Meat Grinder invitation offers another pair of entry points: actors and observers. Initiated by Zhao Xuan within Kousi Theatre, the project brings performing and observing into a shared process. Reading its initiator and roles first makes the organisation of an invitation easier to understand.

Continue from the invitation to the credited record

Next, read the 2023 announcement for The Last Rehearsal. Biographies and named roles connect several projects: someone may contribute to a collective work, then perform music or take on production work elsewhere. Following names, roles and dates reveals a developing practice.

Invitations and later announcements offer different materials. An invitation describes how a project might begin; participant accounts and post-performance writing preserve further experiences. Reading these dated historical records together connects a first invitation to credits, shared work and later responses, helping readers find a form of participation that interests them.
