An existing play opens towards performers’ own material

In the invitation published on 7 April 2022, Wang Qing’er identifies herself as director and a co-founder of Glass Theatre, alongside co-founder and poster designer Wang Xinrui. She names Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie as the starting point and welcomes people without professional acting experience into rehearsal. The existing play is approached through the people joining the work.

The invitation proposes three Lauras, one Jim and seven glass animals. It also considers bringing performers’ own material into the script, giving the animals names and forms of self-expression. This is a specific proposal for an open adaptation: shared characters provide a reference while personal contributions may alter how a part takes shape.

Invitations, posters and publication dates mark different stages

The April invitation initially proposes an anniversary performance in early May. A separately preserved poster announces 21 May, while Glass Theatre’s original account published the online edition on 2 June. Read together, these dates distinguish recruitment, performance preparation and digital publication. They need not be collapsed into a single date for every version.

The poster names Glass Theatre, Beifeng Theatre, P4 Theater, Transcendental Band and Theatre Public Toilet beneath a deliberately self-mocking production heading about having contributed no money. Its wording records a collaborative network rather than a funding statement. The online edition’s Glass Theatre production credit gives that particular publication its own identity.

The digital edition connects performance to camera and editing

The online description credits Wang Qing’er with directing, camera and editing. Laura is credited to Wang Xinrui, Zhou Yinghong, Zhang Haolin and Duan Shuai; Amanda to Xiuxiu and Jiang Haizhu; and Tom to Yan Song. Compared with the initial invitation, the list gives the published edition its own concrete distribution of performers.

Camera and editing make a version available to distant viewers and introduce responsibilities that require their own credits. Creating a character, performing live, recording an image and organising a digital edition are related forms of work. Reading the credits provides an entry into their relationship without treating every task as interchangeable.

Production liaison and rehearsal records reveal collaboration

He Fa is credited, alongside Qu Wenhao, as the absent father in the frame. Production liaison names Duan Shuai, Zhang Haolin and He Fa, while Xie Yipeng, also named Ian君, receives the rehearsal photography and documentation credit. A person can move between performing and organising, with each responsibility retaining its own description.

This gives a precise route through the collaboration: begin with Glass Theatre and Wang’s directing identity, continue through the poster’s partner names, then follow performers, documentation and liaison. The digital performance archive preserves a work together with the relationships through which it was made. P4’s participation remains visible within Glass Theatre’s production.
