A reading can move beyond speaking a script

Beifeng’s 2021 reading invitation includes poetry, dramatic roles, instruments and music. It describes the meeting as recitation, debate, expressive and bodily training, with collaborative improvisation. A text becomes material through which people can begin working with one another.

The 2022 invitation to a second Theatre Hub session publishes discussion and photographs from the first. Its description proposes breaking stories apart and opening them to viewing, reading and rehearsal. Images of participants holding texts, sitting together and standing to interact connect words to a shared situation rather than leaving them on the page.

Read words together with voice and position

Begin with a passage and follow how it is spoken: who starts, who responds, who changes position and when discussion becomes action. This offers a way in without requiring the reader to imagine becoming a performer immediately.

The workshop around Love provides another route through a particular dramatic text. Comparing it with Beifeng and the Theatre Hub makes it possible to ask what a text is used for and how different organisational forms leave different kinds of records.
